We have fine-tuned the calibration on both on our in-house Dyno as well as living with the setup day to day on the road with our own development cars.
Combined with our various track testing sessions, we feel we have developed the ultimate software upgrades for the S55 engine. We have spent considerable time refining the throttle maps and power delivery in each gear to ensure quick but controllable progress.
The power is instantly adjustable with the BMW Drive selection modes so you can quickly tailor the delivery to the environmental conditions. Even with the OPF filters and standard exhaust in place we are able to release a massive bhp extra with our Stage1 tune, The new Ecutek software tool not only gives us access to all the critical maps and strategies within the ECU, but it also provides detailed logging capabilities to allow us to quickly analyse our changes and improvements.
We pride ourselves on having the best calibrations available for the F-series engines but the introduction of the Ecutek software has lifted these to a whole new level. With the Ecutek software we are able to combine the best of BMWs calibration updates such as the recent CS models along with our own proven tuning adjustments.
All aspects of the calibration have been refined and enhanced; from the switchable maps and adjustable Torque using the steering wheel controls to the option of live adjustments the pops and crackles from the exhaust and Per Gear performance using the smart Phone App. The software is extremely powerful and puts the driver in full control.
Our remaps include a completely new calibration that allows the S55 engine to provide significant increases in power and torque over the standard engine as well as adding some unique features. We utilise the Cruise Control buttons while the Cruise is turned off but when you switch Cruise Control back on again the buttons work as normal so you lose no functionality.
The software allows for upto 4 separate map slots so let us know if you a specific requirements such as Race fuel use. This feature lets the driver instantly adjust the torque the engine produces using the steering wheel controls. Ideal for quick changes if the weather turns during on a trackday as you want to do more than just adjust drop the peak torque value as each gear will require this to set differently.
All our remaps include recalibrating the Driver Display to show the engines new power and torque figures. All our remaps include removing the top speed limiter so drivers can choose to driver over mph on de-restricted Motorways or on track events. All our remaps include adjusting the exhaust valve to give a better exhaust note and reduce drone when cruising.
Especially useful for cars with performance exhaust or downpipes. This can become extremely loud on cars with no CATs installed.
The simple slider can make the burbles more aggressive of switched off completely. Within the Phone App the driver is able to easily adjust the amount of torque going to the wheels using a simple slider. We have setup a good default setting for the first 3 gears but now the driver can request more or less torque in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th onwards.
This is ideal if you are on a slippery surface, have gripper tyres as few quick changes can really improve the traction and enjoyment of the car. For customers looking for the ultimate performance we are also able to offer an integrated Flex Fuel system which works with the OE ECU and automatically adjust the performance based on the ethanol content in the fuel tank.
We've fine-tuned the calibration for both on our in-house Dyno as well as living with the setup day to day on the road with our own development cars.

All aspects of the calibration have been refined; from the adjustable pops and crackles out of the exhaust, to the recalibrated power dials on the centre screen. We put the power in the drivers hands with instantly adjustable maximum Torque settings that work in conjunction with the BMW Drive selection modes so you can quickly tailor the delivery to the environmental conditions. Even with the OPF filters and standard exhaust in place we are able to release a massive bhp extra with our standard tune, with power increasing to around bhp, with the Ecutek developed tune.
Each car that comes in will also have the engine management system checked and updated to the latest BMW software version. This new firmware version removes the loophole that allows direct programming through the OBD port. We are able to simply reverse this to allowing OBD programming, but we do require the car or ECU to be present so we plug in and unlock it no opening is required. Once completed we can continue to tune remotely as before. For further upgrading above our Stage 1 upgrade we would recommend fitting our S55 crank hub fix as there have been multiple instances of higher powered cars having the engine timing slip, which puts the car into a limp mode and ultimately stops it from starting.
We offer a couple of options to resolve the problem which we have successfully been applying for a number of years for both customers and other garages that have experienced this issue. The most straight forward and cost effective solution is to install our Bolt Capture.Ever since the twin turbo N54 hit the markets in the BMW i, BMW has been building on the design of the turbocharged, direct injected inline 6 engine.
Inthe i received the updated N55 engine followed by the B58 inhowever, the model was rebranded to the i. Unsurprisingly, the success of the turbocharged inline 6 led to its introduction in the F80 BMW M3 beginning with model year These BMW turbo sixes are nothing to snarl at; all are able to produce massive power numbers with a tune and basic bolt-ons.
Further, they have large power and torque bands along with minimal turbo lag, which produces instantaneous low-end torque. Since the initial release of the BMW N54, the engine has gained quite a positive reputation in the tuning community. Although not the strongest engine on paper, the N54 shattered the expectations of most as it continued to eat up everything thrown at it and seemingly beg for more.
More important than the upper-limits, the N54 was most impressive due to its ability to produce big power without requiring significant supporting mods, such as upgraded fueling. BMW quoted the N54 at hp, however, independent testing suggested numbers at the crank closer to hp. Maxing the stock turbos with upgraded turbo inlets will result in power numbers in the whp range, and torque above ft-lbs to the wheels. Open-deck blocks and cast pistons are not great at handling extreme boost pressures for long periods of time.
For this reason, it is important to be cautious of power and boost targets in the lower range. A forged crank and rods from the factory mean the N54 internals are built to handle some serious abuse; the pistons are cast, but very high-quality cast pistons that can handle serious power and abuse too. Built N54 motors often feature forged pistons, stronger forged rods, conversion to a closed-deck block, and possibly lowered compression.
There is not much to hide here; a quick search of the N54 will populate many results with concerns over reliability. Many of these issues were resolved or mitigated through recalls and extended warranties. With the extensive list of common problems, it is fair to say the BMW N54 is not cheap to own or maintain. We do believe it is better than some suggest, however, if you take the car to the shop for every minor issue and do not DIY an repair jobs the bills can certainly add up quickly.
Jake and I have both had excellent experiences with reliability on our N54 powered i and i, respectively. However, our N54 i maintained much better than my i has experienced countless issues. Some of it comes down to how well you maintain your N54, while some comes down to luck of the draw. Nonetheless, you must pay to play and the N54 is no exception.
bootmod3 S55 - BMW F80 F82 M3 M4 F87 M2 Competition Tune
As compared to the other BMW turbo inline 6 engines the N54 earns the worst score for reliability. Fortunately, BMW learned its lesson on the N54 and focused on improving the reliability of its future turbo engines. Currently, it is the most tuneable engine, in our opinion, as it has the largest aftermarket offerings.
Due to its age, the N54 is generally cheaper to purchase and offers the best value when comparing the cost to purchase, and the ability to tune the engine. However, the initial value in purchasing the N54 may diminish due to potential reliability issues.

Due to the design of the crankshaft, it is known to have the timing chain sprocket spin on the end of the crankshaft, causing the cams to go out of time.
Steve Dinan has been building high performance and racing engines for BMW sincewinning 11 racing championships including 3 prototype championships and two 24 Hours of Daytona. The same engine shop that builds the racing engines also builds the street car engines.
These talented engineers, machinists, and builders have built hundreds of engines from OEM street rebuilds to full-blown racing engines. In extreme cases, the valves can hit the pistons, causing catastrophic damage. Furthermore, the S55 only has half of a normal crankshaft thrust bearing.
If you are planning a large power increase with bigger turbos,CarBahn Autoworkshas designed a high-performance engine to handle very high outputs by pinning the cam sprocket to the crankshaft.
To ensure durability we also machine the block to accommodate a full circle thrust main. In addition, we utilize higher quality racing Carrillo connecting rods and forged CP pistons. The stage 2 engine also includes Cylinder head porting for increased flow at high RPM. The stock engine compression ratio is relatively high due to the Corporate Average Fuel Economy CAFE standards which push for consistently higher fuel economy in cars and trucks. However, this increased compression limits engine performance with higher boost settings by decreasing the size of the fuel-air charge in the combustion chamber, forcing the ignition timing to retard far below MBT mean best timing, the theoretical optimal ignition timing.
In an emissions-legal street car, the lowered compression has the added benefit of reducing catalyst inlet temperatures and improved drive-ability on pump gas. Your Review.

This N55 turbo upgrade guide will dig into the intricacies of upgrading your N55 turbo and help you decide whether stage 1, 2 or 3 is right for you and your power goals. Turbo upgrades for the N55 fall into three stages, with stage 3 generating the most horsepower gains, which of course also comes with a bigger price tag. You might as well maximize your stock turbo power before you go chasing for more.
This list below will get you to FBO full bolt-on and should get you in the whp range. As you start making more power, you need parts that can handle and deliver that power.
Here is everything that is a must-have for upgrading turbos excluding anything that will come in the turbo kit :. You can add E85 to this list if you want to be sitting around whp on your stock setup. As you get more aggressive with your N55 horsepower goals, you will need to start thinking about things such as fuel pumps, meth kits, port injection, etc.
Before I get chopped, I will say that you do not need to upgrade your intercooler or exhaust for any of these turbos upgrades.F80 M3 Bootmod3 Stock Exhaust Burble Settings and Sound Clip
The N55 turbo stage 1 setup is essentially a slightly modified stock turbo. The larger wheel allows the engine to hold the boost until approx. Overall, a stage 1 upgrade is a great option if you blow your stock turbo and want a slight upgrade without any added headache tuning, part upgrades, etc. If you are a more serious tuner and looking to break the whp mark by a good margin, stage 2 is likely the best option for you. The install cost of upgrading turbos warrants doing it right the first time!
Stage 2 options are where the serious tuners should start. Stage 2 systems will put you in the whp ballpark. Engine reliability obviously decreases as you push the upper range of the setup, but is also highly dependent on your tune and other factors.
We will cover reliability in more depth a bit further down! Stage 2 is the best option for N55 owners who are serious about tuning, want more than whp, and are willing to spend a pretty penny. Inlets and Outlets Upgraded inlets and outlets: these are required depending on manufacturer and some kits may include them. Fuel Supply Upgrades To reach the full power potential of a stage 2 turbo you will need additional fueling.
Your two options here are a meth kit or port injection. Fuel Upgrades In addition to needing some fuel supply upgrades, you will also need some actual fuel upgrades. Running high levels of boost and generating high power levels will require…. Without fuel and fuel delivery upgrades, on 93 octane pump gas, you can expect to run around the whp range.
There are 3 reputable companies that offer stage 2 setups: Pure, Vargas, and Steam Turbochargers. Pure and Vargas are the more widely used setups, but Steam has a good offering which has about 25whp of additional upside vs. Here is some info on the setups in no particular order:. With the supporting fuel mods that we discussed above, this setup is good for about whp.
Similar to their stage 1 offering, the turbo uses all OEM housings and appears stock from the outside. The center of the housing is machined out to allow for larger wheels. And to note, these are just the major parts costs and assume you are already FBO with an upgraded chargepipe, etc. There will likely be other hoses and small things that will need to replaced as well.
The Vargas setup is almost identical to the Pure setup with the slight exception of the wheels — this setup also uses an OEM-styled turbo with a bored out center and larger wheels.
